The cases within each category are arranged chronologically. The series covers the years 1968 to 1987.

The dates of the cases Bakken participated in range from 1977 to 1986. The dates of the Supreme Court decisions on cases appealed from Bakken's court range from 1970 to 1987.

This series contains annual correspondence files, which include small case files and general correspondence. These cover the years 1967 to 1986. The materials are arranged alphabetically within each year. Documents related to individual cases have been kept together and filed according to the dates of the earliest materials related to each case. An autobiography written in 1995 was added to the end of this series.
