Biographical or Historical Information

The first public school in Grand Forks was organized in 1873 by a teacher named Hattie Richmond. The first school was attended by eight students in a one-room schoolhouse obtained through public subscription. A rapidly expanding population resulted in the organization of Grand Forks County in 1874 and calls for a new school facility. The Grand Forks County Commissioners provided for two county school districts in 1874. The city's population grew from a few hundred people in 1875 to more than 1,700 people, according to the 1880 Federal Census. The Grand Forks School Board was organized in 1881, following the provisions of an act of the Territorial Council. The Board held its first meeting March 17, 1881.
