Scope and Contents

The Clayton N. Watkins Papers consist primarily of materials from the 1920s, when Watlkins was a high school student in Fargo and then a student at the University of North Dakota (UND). Included are several letters and postcards from a trip to Europe in 1924 and photographs from his high school and college days. There are also newspaper and magazine articles and a "Beat the Aggies" pin from a football game between UND and the North Dakota Agricultural College (later NDSU).

Biographical or Historical Information

Clayton N. Watkins graduated from Fargo High School and then attended the University of North Dakota (UND), graduating in 1928 with a Bachelor of Arts. During his time at UND, Watkins was Sophomore Class President and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, Ad Altiora Literary Society, and the Reserve Officers Training Corps (Officers' Club). He also played on the varsity football team, earning a letter in the sport, and was selected to Who's Who. In addition, Watkins was a member of the H.C. Plumley Chapter in Fargo of DeMolay International, an organization involved with teaching young men to be leaders in their communities. His trip to Europe in 1924 was likely as a representative of DeMolay.
