Scope and Contents

The David Vorland Papers, 1974-2005, document his activities at UND. As an aide to President Kendall Baker, he recorded notes from the president’s cabinet meetings and vice president cabinet meetings. The papers include correspondence between President Kendall Baker and Vorland along with other miscellaneous communications. There are files containing information that the incoming President Charles Kupchella needed to know along with a file for Don Kojick, who followed Vorland when he retired. While working at UND he helped get approval for construction of the Aurora (now Alerus) Center.

David Vorland was born in Harvey, North Dakota. He attended the University of North Dakota, where he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1965. Vorland then attended Northwestern University and received a master's degree in journalism in 1966. In September 1968, Vorland was hired at UND as an instructor in journalism. From 1970 to 1973, Vorland was a mass communications instructor at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. In September 1973, Vorland returned to UND and became the Director of the News Bureau, which eventually became known as the Office of University Relations. While he was the director, Vorland also worked part time as a lecturer in journalism. In 1993 Vorland became a full time executive assistant to President Baker. Vorland had intended to retire in July 2000, but ended up returning to the position of director of University Relations at the request of then President Charles Kupchella. Vorland retired in 2005 after spending over 30 years at UND.
