Howard H. Russell Papers
Scope and Contents
The Howard H. Russell Papers contain correspondence regarding his temporary detainment by the Russian Government near Nuremberg, Germany, in 1948. He was in Nuremberg due to his position as Secretary General for the American Military Tribunal. Also included is one letter from Russell to UND President John West regarding the donation of the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials Records in 1949.

Biographical or Historical Information
Howard Harding Russell was born on October 17, 1903. He joined the UND English Department in 1929 and earned a Ph.D in English from UND in 1938. He served as the Secretary General for the American Military Tribunal at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials following the end of the Second World War. He died in St. Cloud, Minnesota, on July 7, 1993.
