The Leo Speare Papers date from 1898 to 1982 and consist primarily of newspaper clippings. Also included are photographs of Antler, North Dakota, a community in Bottineau County.

Biographical or Historical Information

Leo Speare was born on September 5, 1908 in Fargo, North Dakota. Speare received most of his education from William Wegner, an inventor, druggist, optician, and amateur photographer from Antler, North Dakota. Speare also became an amateur photographer. He worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company from 1928 to 1964. He married Nellie Nelson in 1933. They moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1942. Nellie died in 1950. Speare married Alma Nelson in 1952. She died in 1977. Speare married Helen Ulseth in 1980. In 1983, he was a noble grand of Banner Lodge No. 4 of the International Organization of Odd Fellows. Leo Speare died October 22, 1984. The Grand Forks Herald was used as a source of biographical information.
