Biographical or Historical Information

Engel earned a master’s degree from the University of North Dakota (UND), and a doctorate from the University of Minnesota.  He served three years in the Army as a first lieutenant during the Korean conflict, and was awarded a Bronze Star during his deployment on Pork Chop Hill.  He earned his graduate degree in speech after completing his military service, and returned to UND in 1967 to establish the university’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.  Engel served as the department’s chair for its first 11 years and continued to build the department’s undergraduate and graduate programs until his retirement as professor emeritus in 1993.  An ASHA Fellow, he also served as president of the North Dakota Speech Language Hearing Association.” – The ASHA Leader, June 2019, p. 28.
