Biographical or Historical Information

Stephen Shu Ning Liu was a landlord’s son, born on March 16, 1930. He grew up in near the Yangtze River, with six other children. Liu’s grandfather taught him the Chinese Classics when he was five. Liu graduated from the University of Nanking, Nanking, China, in May 1948. He then went on to get his B. A. in English in May 1956, from Wayland Baptist College, in Plainview, Texas. At the University of Texas in Austin, he obtained his M. A. in English in May 1959. In August of 1973, Liu received a Ph. D. in English from the University of North Dakota. With his degrees in English, Stephen Shu Ning Liu taught at many colleges and universities. These include Northern Montana College (1966-1970), the College of San Mateo (California) as a visiting lecturer (summer 1968), as well as the University of North Dakota as a visiting lecturer (summer 1972). He returned to teach at the University of North Dakota from 1970-1973. In August 1973, he took a position at Clark County Community College, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Liu has many academic honors, which include the Outstanding Senior Boy at Wayland College (May 1956) and the Better English Scholarship at the University of Tennessee (1963-1965). His essays, short stories, poems are published in English and Chinese, and can be found in various books, literary magazines, and national newspapers.
