Biographical or Historical Information

The Hoople Monday Night Study Club was organized in 1927 and held its first meeting on December 5th. The club was an organization of women whose objective was to improve their minds and be of mutual helpfulness within their homes, church, school and community, as well as state and federal interests. To become a member an individual had to submit their desire to become one. By 1962, total membership was limited to 21. The club year began with the district convention in late August or early September and ended in late April or May. Meetings were held on alternating Monday nights at a member's home. Each meeting began with a roll call activity. These activities included sharing a favorite recipe or book or sharing what their secret ambition was. Following roll the pledge or creed was sometimes recited and a scripture was read. Following the scripture reading was a contest. The contest was generally in question and answer format and taken from a newspaper, book or another source. A prize was awarded to the winner. The contest was later replaced by a musical selection and door prize. Following the contest, the program was conducted. The program was conducted by a member on a topic that changed from meeting to meeting. Occasionally a guest speaker was invited to speak on a particular topic. The topics addressed in the Club generally related to North Dakota, current events and news, famous individuals, holidays, trips taken recently by one of the members or holiday celebrations. Following the program refreshments were generally served by the hostess. In addition to their weekly meetings, the Hoople Monday Night Study Club made numerous donations to groups and organizations, including the Florence Crittenton Home (Fargo), Children's Village, Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, Band Boosters, Aasand Children Fund, Hoople School Library, Jamestown State Hospital and the Fisher Rest Home (Grafton). In addition, the club sponsored students who attended International Music Camp and Girl's State. The last meeting of the Hoople Monday Night Study club was held on October 26, 1997.
