Biographical or Historical Information
Twenty women attended a pre-organizational meeting for a local chapter of the League of Women Voters in Minot, North Dakota on April 30, 1956. The Minot League of Women Voters was organized on May 14, 1956. The first officers were: Mrs. James Harper, President; Mrs. Marvel Maher, Vice President; Mrs. T. H. Foss, Second Vice President; Mrs. Allen C. Hensrud, Secretary; Helen Burns, Treasurer. Four Directors were also elected: Mrs. William Kitto, Mary Frisch, Mrs. Michael Dolan, and Mrs. M. L. Bearman. The group promoted voter literacy by organizing public panel discussions on ballot issues and candidate forums, and through radio, television and newspaper publicity. Members also telephoned and visited potential voters, set up a Voters Service Booth in the post office on election day, and participated in political telephone polling sponsored by the North Dakota League of Women Voters. By 1980, the Minot League of Women Voters had disbanded.
