Biographical or Historical Information

The College for Human Resources Development was founded July 1, 1972, with the purpose of preparing students for careers in human services. The college consisted of six departments, all of which came from existing colleges. From the College of Education came health, physical education, and recreation; counseling and guidance; industrial technology; and home economics and nutrition. Social work came from the College of Arts and Sciences, and occupational therapy came from the School of Medicine. Later, a seventh department, library science and audiovisual, was added. This department was transferred from the College of Education. Dr. Henry Tomasek was appointed dean of the college in January 1974 and remained in that position until the closing of the college. In 1996, the College for Human Resources Development was eliminated due to low enrollment. Three of its departments merged with the Center for Teaching and Learning to form the College of Education and Human Development. These were social work, health, physical education, and recreation, and counseling and guidance. The other departments were transferred back to their original colleges or were eliminated.
