Scope and Contents

The Walter Erdman Papers consist of baptismal, confirmation, and marriage certificates for members of the Erdman and Voigt families. Also included are two photographs of Walter Erdman from 1979 and 1983.

Biographical or Historical Information

"Walter C. Erdman, a son of Otto and Emma (Voight) Erdman, was born December 2, 1911, at Willow City, ND. He was reared and educated in the Willow Creek community. On April 12, 1936, he was married to Ruth Siebert at Minot, ND. That same year, they purchased a farm near Willow City. In 1962, they moved into Bottineau, and Walter continued to farm with his son, Kenneth. Walter worked as a Federal Crop Insurance Representative for Bottineau and McHenry counties from 1962 to 1969. In 1973, he was elected as senator to the North Dakota State Legislature. He served as senator for 10 years and as representative for two years. They moved to Grand Forks in 1989, and Ruth passed away in 1993. Walter moved into the Valley Memorial Nursing Home at Grand Forks in 2001, and had resided there since. Walter passed away September 25, 2004. Walter was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church at Bottineau. He served on many local, township, school, church and county offices. He was director of the International Peace Garden for a time and a member of the Executive Committee. He received the NDSU Alumni Association Agriculture Award and was awarded the Lifetime Service Award from the Bottineau Jaycees. He is survived by two daughters, Karen and her husband, David Johnson of Carbondale, IL; and Kathleen and her husband, Bill Harris of Vail, CO; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nora Gregoire and Ines Murray, both of Grand Forks. He was preceded in death by his wife; son Kenneth; and one brother, Lawrence. Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Bottineau. Officiating at the service was the Reverend David Hintz. Avonne Gessner was the organist and the congregation sang selected hymns. Casket bearers were Larry Herslip, Walter Biberdorf, Buck Schoenborn, Walter Richwalski, Banks Siber, and Wayne Welk. Burial was at Oak Creek Cemetery in Bottineau."
