Scope and Contents

The Clare Hedahl Diary consists of a diary that she kept during the last part of her senior year at Fessenden High School, from January 1st through April 19th. Throughout the diary she wrote about the weather, her trips home on the freight train, and her course work. During her senior year, she studied Bookkeeping, English, Domestic Science, Sewing and History. She also wrote about the Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball games and the school track meet.

Biographical or Historical Information

Clare Hedahl was born on December 18, 1898, to O.S. and Ingrid Hedahl. She attended Fessenden High School in Fessenden, North Dakota, and was active in Girls’ Basketball and the school choir. While a school teacher in 1921, Clare married Harold Bullis of Robinson, North Dakota. They farmed for a short time north of Robinson, before opening a confectionary and lunch room in Robinson. Clare served as a clerk for the Robinson School Board for several years. Both Clare and her husband were active in the Robinson Methodist Church: Harold as a lay minister and Clare as a Sunday school teacher and pianist. The couple had five children: Robert, Harold, Edith, Barbara, and Joan. After her husband retired from being a rural mail carrier near Robinson in 1955, they moved to Arizona. Clare Bullis died in December 1985 in Arizona.
