Stuart McDonald Papers

"Stuart J. McDonald, 90 of Loveland died October 2, 2021. Born in Grand Forks, ND, March 15, 1931. Stuart attended St. Mary’s grade school, Central High School and the University of North Dakota. He was Vice-President of McDonald’s Clothing in Grand Forks and was active in civic and church affairs. Stuart married his high school sweetheart, Marceda Wright, in 1951. The couple had three children. In the early sixty’s McDonald began a series of editorial cartoons which were published every Sunday in the Grand Forks Herald and subsequently reprinted in a number of other North Dakota daily and weekly newspapers. He won three Honor Medals from the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge for his cartoons. McDonald was elected as a Republican to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1966 and 1968. He was Chairman of the North Dakota Republican Campaign Committee in 1968. In 1973 McDonald left McDonald’s Clothing to join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Region VIII, Denver, as a Business and Industry Specialist in the Office of Public Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations. He returned to the private sector in 1981. From 1981 to 1986 he was Principal of Stuart McDonald and Associates, an Intergovernmental relations consulting firm in Denver. During this period, he did radio and television commercial work in the Denver market. McDonald returned to North Dakota in 1986 as Chairman of the Jamestown/Stutsman County Business and Industrial Development effort. In 1990 he returned to Federal Service as a Public Affairs Specialist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Western Region, Denver. He retired from Federal Service in 2001. Marceda, his wife of fifty years, died that same year. In 2003 Stuart married Ann Pedrett in a private ceremony in Estes Park, Colorado. The couple moved to Newburgh, Indiana, in 2004, where he continued his political cartooning. The couple then moved to Loveland, CO in 2015, where Stuart began sculpting at the age of 85. Stuart was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, John; sisters Dona, Marge and Ruth; and his wife, Marceda. He is survived by his wife Ann, three children: Terri Ames (Luke Boll), Newburgh, IN, Greg, Anchorage, AK, and Andrea (Shaun) Shahmardian, Ft. Collins, CO; three step-sons: Troy Pedrett (Tiffany), Dacono, CO, Anthony Pedrett (Jeab), Cairo, Egypt and Ben Pendrett (Gina), Longmont, CO and nine grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Services were held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Loveland, CO on Thursday, October 9, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. Inurnment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Grand Forks, ND at a future date."
