Scope and Contents

Scrapbook 1 contains photographs primarily from 1900-1903, with a few photos from 1911-1912. The earlier set depicts various buildings on the UND campus, the parlor in Davis Hall, and the layout of a science classroom. ROTC cadets drilling and in the classroom, as well as the football and track teams are also shown. Numerous photographs show students at formal functions. There is also a photo of "Black Maria," a horse drawn carriage. Scrapbook 2 focuses on UND during the years 1922-1926. Multiple items are included: a 13 page "Memory Book" (in the form of a guest registry, comments); Blacks Fountain menu; numerous ticket stubs, programs, and other mementos; May Fete programs (1918-1926); newspaper articles; football, basketball, and track results (1922-1923), and photos of Hazel Patten, UND's best woman athlete.

Maud Mary Dickinson was born in Minnewaukan, North Dakota on 2 April 1904. Her father, George, was born in 1862 at Neenah, Wisconsin, and came to Grand Forks, Dakota Territory in 1881. Her mother, Maud, was born in 1864 in Elkhorn Wisconsin. Her parents got married in February 1887 at Devils Lake, North Dakota. Both of Maud’s grandparents were immigrants from Great Britain. Maud was youngest of six siblings, the next youngest was eight years older. Maud graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1926 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa that year. While in college, she served as the ADT historian, and was a member of the Playmakers Reserve, Women’s Athletic Association, Daily Student staff, and the Intercollegiate debate team. In the 1930s, she was a newspaper reporter in Minneapolis and was later a public school teacher in Mobridge, South Dakota. In 1955, she was elected as the Vice President of the Washington, DC chapter of the UND alumni club. She passed away on 13 December 1992.
