"The Eris of the West: the Origin and Genealogy of a Fabricated Narrative and How it Contaminated a Century of Theodore Roosevelt Historiography" by Austin Artz (2018 Winning Paper)

The Merrifield Competition is sponsored by the Elwyn B. Robinson Department of Special Collections and the Department of History. The annual competition awards a $1,000 scholarship to the UND student who writes the most outstanding scholarly research paper which utilizes primary source material from Special Collections. The winner is chosen by a jury of four UND faculty members. The Competition is named in honor of Webster Merrifield, UND’s first Librarian and third President.
